What's Great
Travel + Leisure says... "Secluded 1922 lakeside lodge with family-friendly cabins and a mountain-style golf course, spread across 700 acres in Jasper National Park. Rooms to Book: Avoid smaller standards; Lakeside Cabin Deluxes ($50 more) have a more affordable (if partially obstructed) view of Lac Beauvert. Insider Tip: Enjoy a glass of wine while sitting out on the sundeck on Lac Beauvert. The southward view sweeps the Whistler mountain range and Mt. Edith Cavell." And Travel + Leisure says... "Active types will love the Stanley Thompson 18-hole course and on-site horseback riding. But for those ready to relax, a seat in the classic wooden lodge overlooking snowcapped Mount Edith Cavell and sparkling Lac Beauvert is just the ticket. Guest Tip: Chris and Bill Pickering of San Diego, who have returned annually since they honeymooned here in 1990, book the same lakefront junior suite, Room 510, every year. “It’s not as palatial—or expensive—as the cottages,” says mom Chris. “But it has a picture window and an amazing view. When the kids were young, it was especially handy because of its proximity to the lodge’s game room.” National Geographic Says... "Cedar chalets and log cabins on 700 Canadian Rockies acres (283 hectares). Country-style decor. Views of blue, blue Lake Beauvert. Local storyteller shares Jasper lore. Nearby: Miette Hot Springs for a dip, Marmot Basin for skiing, Icefields Parkway for a scenic drive. 446 rooms, suites, and cabins."

The Cottages at the Boat Basin
1 Old South Wharf
Nantucket, Massachusetts, US
From $550 per night
The Cottages at the Boat Basin.

What's Great
Travel + Leisure says... "The next best thing to staying aboard your own sailboat is booking one of these weathered-shingle cottages, perched on Nantucket Harbor wharves with the sea swishing right below. Most of the 29 cottages (there are studio, one- and two-bedroom options) are spread along Old South Wharf and Swain’s Wharf—both an easy walk from the hub of Nantucket Town—but once you’ve settled in, the sounds of seagulls, slapping halyards, and occasional horns from passing ferries make you feel like you’re bobbing alone on a privately moored yacht. Of course, there are lots of comforts here that would be hard to match at sea—like spacious, comfy sitting rooms gaily decorated in maritime blue, white, and red, many with flat-screen TV’s cleverly hidden inside pine armoires; or the adjacent kitchenettes with their fridges and dining tables; or the slate-floored bathrooms with their walk-in showers and piles of fluffy towels. Best of all, just about every cottage has a private deck, where you can take the morning sun and watch boaties hoisting their sails for the day. Tip: If you have pets, you’re welcome to bring them—as long as you book one of the Woof Cottages (which come specially equipped with food and water bowls, litter boxes, and yummy treats). Room to Book: The four cottages at the end of Old South Wharf are our favorites; they’re the only ones that face directly out toward the harbor. Ask for John Jay or Loon (both one-bedroom cottages) or Kittiwake or Mermansion (two bedrooms)." -From www.travelandleisure.com

"Set in a traffic-free conservation area of mangroves, wetlands, and coastal dunes, the 350-room Couran Cove Island Resort prides itself on its approach to environmentalism. But this is a far cry from roughing it. The spa has Vichy jet showers and Thalgo body treatments. For a classic Aussie "beach and bush" experience, stay in one of the 95 self-catering, solar-powered nature cabins hidden among banksia trees, just yards from the island's 14-mile white-sand Pacific beach."

THE LOOK Luxury beach condos with a mind for conservation.
GREEN FACTOR All 351 rooms on the sandy island are wired for conveniences such as refrigerators and Internet access, yet the hotel reaps planetary gains with the latest eco-gadgetry. Mosquitoes are lured away with patented UV traps. The property hired colorists to blend the buildings against the bottle-blue sky and tawny melaleucas. And the TV's let guests monitor their personal usage of water, gas, and electricity and the resulting greenhouse-gas emissions."

What's Great
Travel + Leisure says... "Where’s the perfect perch for explorers of British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, a dramatic hundred-mile stretch of shoreline that has everything from sandy beaches to tranquil lagoons to high, craggy peaks? In the trees, of course. Rockwater Secret Cove Resort...accessible via a short ferry or floatplane ride from Vancouver, has recently opened a 1,500-foot-long treetop walk among the property’s tall stands of arbutus trees. The walk connects a new series of luxury tent-house suites, all with heated slate floors, shoji screens, hydrotherapy tubs, and private verandas overlooking the Malaspina Strait. Soak up the sea air during an alfresco massage at the tented spa in the cove, or launch a kayak or scuba-diving trip right from the resort’s black-sand beach. And it’s only 15 minutes by water shuttle across the strait to the tiny Thormanby Islands and their glistening alabaster beaches. Time your arrival for low tide, when you can wade through tidal pools filled with starfish, sea urchins, and Dungeness crabs." -Affordable Beach Resorts
