What's Great
Travel + Leisure says... "THE SETTING 18,000 acres in the foothills of the Cedar Mountains. GREEN FACTOR When Bill McAdam purchased the vast tract of wilderness in 1991, the property was a virtual wasteland of overgrazed veld. Today, the Kloof blooms with 800 tree and plant species, down to rarities like the Clanwilliam cedar. Threatened wildlife has come thundering back, too, including red hartebeests, black wildebeests, bontebok, aardwolves, 150 rare birds, and one of the largest private herds of endangered Cape mountain zebras in the world. More than 130 ancient rock-art sites dating back 10,000 years are also safeguarded in their natural environment. After a day in the wild, it's nice to know that the 16-room Relais & Châteaux lodge has hand-sewn bed linens."

Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge
Carretera Hiram Bingham
Machu Picchu, Peru
From $910 per night

Located right within the boundaries of ancient Machu Picchu Ruins, with views to the unique Huayna Picchu Mountain and the Urubamba River, where you can experience peace in a natural ecological environment. You are just a few steps from Machu Picchu, a place chosen long ago for its remote and spectacular location. Here the Incas worshipped the mountain, the sky, and their sacred river far below. Here they worshipped nature. This city was built for a special few, and today you inherit their privilege, the chance to experience both the unique peace that descends on Machu Picchu at dusk, and the sense of hovering expectation that fills the air at dawn. These precious hours when most visitors have left are yours, and you have these mountains to yourself. Part of the fascination of Machu Picchu is due to the lack of precise information about its origin. Why the Incas built, occupied and then abandoned it. All we know for sure is that because of its majestic construction and location, this unique place played a very important part at some time during the Inca era. Attention It is mandatory to secure train tickets to Machu Picchu when confirming room reservations. Train seating is limited and demand high and therefore last minute reservation requests can not be accommodated. Include number of passengers and dates of travel. Located in the boundaries of the ancient Inka Citadel. Walking distance from the entrance of the ruins.

What's Great
Travel + Leisure says... "Eco-friendly Spanish colonial-style lodge tucked between the Peruvian highlands and jungle, and steps from the Inca Trail; the only hotel actually set next to the UNESCO-protected site. Rooms to Book: No. 21 offers views over Huayna Picchu—our favorite. Nos. 37-40 with terraces are a close second. Insider Tip: Enjoy a private sunrise breakfast in the hotel's lush orchid gardens.

What's Great
Travel + Leisure says...
"Set in a traffic-free conservation area of mangroves, wetlands, and coastal dunes, the 350-room Couran Cove Island Resort prides itself on its approach to environmentalism. But this is a far cry from roughing it. The spa has Vichy jet showers and Thalgo body treatments. A sports facility includes squash courts, rock-climbing walls, and a Carl Lewis-endorsed running track. For a classic Aussie "beach and bush" experience, stay in one of the 95 self-catering, solar-powered nature cabins hidden among banksia trees, just yards from the island's 14-mile white-sand Pacific beach."
and'
THE LOOK Luxury beach condos with a mind for conservation.
GREEN FACTOR All 351 rooms on the sandy island are wired for conveniences such as refrigerators and Internet access, yet the hotel reaps planetary gains with the latest eco-gadgetry. Mosquitoes are lured away with patented UV traps. The property hired colorists to blend the buildings against the bottle-blue sky and tawny melaleucas. And the TV's let guests monitor their personal usage of water, gas, and electricity and the resulting greenhouse-gas emissions."

    What's Great
Travel + Leisure says... "THE LOOK Part desert oasis, part mad scientist's project. GREEN FACTOR Tom Worrell's textured adobe-style villas are made of Gunnash, the ash from coal mines. Exotic fruits and organic herbs, grown in the hotel's "biolarium," show up (along with yak meat) on the spa menus conceived by Johnny Vinczencz, one of Florida's top young chefs. Although the 38 casitas have satellite TV and overstuffed couches, the (mostly) solar-powered sanctuary hints at the future of sustainable travel. If you're not convinced, consult the in-house psychic." -25 Great Eco-Lodges National Geographic Traveler says...
"Native American-inspired adobe-style property built in 2003 and already expanded. Sprawled across six acres at the foot of the Sangre de Cristos. Suites and casitas have walls painted with murals and private patios shaded by native cottonwood trees. Explore arts-oriented Taos; visit exhibitions at resort's own Grand Bohemian Gallery, whose gift shop is all about local art and jewelry. 84 rooms."
