"The London West Hollywood, formerly the Bel Age hotel, received an ever-so-grand makeover from Irish architect David Collins. The all-suite hotel even features a Gordon Ramsay dining room."

"Everyone says it's the best - big rooms, a pool at the top, good personal service and value for money.' And that's just the cab-driver from Los Angeles airport talking. Any suspicion that his poetic licence should be taken away is banished the moment you venture inside the Art Deco lobby of the London West Hollywood. You can forget the hotel's self-conscious (and largely unnoticeable) 'nod to British style': your initial impression is that you have stepped into Alphonse Mucha's Prague, except the luxury here is more discreet. As for the atmosphere of the 200 suites, designed by David Collins Studio in a style trumpeted uncertainly as 'bel age', it is reminiscent less of Knightsbridge than of Pompeii, the capacious bath and black-and-white mosaic tiles evoking the sort of washroom where a Roman senator might come for his scrapes, albeit in a Gilchrist & Soames shower cap. But the suites are indeed roomy, the bed positioned in the centre with a walk-around headboard; and whatever the influence, it's all most tasteful. The wall tiles are hand-cut from bleached oak, the cupboards are pea-green, the linen Italian and the coffee-maker a Keurig. Even the view across the flat roofs to the Hollywood Hills does not disappoint. The only indisputably 'London' element is the ground-floor restaurant, opened by Gordon Ramsay and his aptly named chef de cuisine, Andy Cook. The amberjack sushi with black-bean miso, cherry-blossom shrimp and pressed king mackerel is especially good - and the closest you'll get to fish and chips here.
WHEN TO GO Any time: LA has mild, sunny winters and very hot summers.
ROOM TO BOOK Any on the top floor."-From www.cntraveller.com
Decorated by the world-famous designer Jacques Garcia and facing the Grand Theatre, in the very heart of the city, The Regent Bordeaux is stepping back in as an outstanding product. With 150 rooms including 22 suites, 2 bars, the gourmet restaurant Le Pressoir d0Argent, the Brasserie de l'Europe formerly called Cafe de Bordeaux, magnificent function rooms, an exceptional experience awaits you, thanks to the revival of this truly unique Palace Bordelais.
What's Great Conde Nast Traveler says... "Its setting alone makes the Regent Grand special: directly opposite the Grand Théâtre opera house, which was designed by the same architect in the 1770s, at the heart of Bordeaux's beautifully preserved, 18th-century town centre. Its opening has at last given the city the sort of grand hotel it has lacked since the original Regent Grand closed in 1990. The reincarnation is five times larger, as it has cleverly colonised several adjacent buildings, resulting in a slightly convoluted layout within the handsome, golden-stone façades. Interior designer Jacques Garcia has come up with a theatrical take on 19th-century Second Empire style, with sultry low lighting, plenty of plush finishes, giant flower arrangements and a row of black Baccarat crystal chandeliers. Bedrooms, although rather tame by Garcia's flamboyant standards, are cocooning, with high beds, deep mattresses, richly patterned fabrics and marble-and-mahogany bathrooms. One suspects that the hotel's Fashion Avenue, a shiny affair of capsule luxury boutiques designed by Italian architect Ferruccio Laviani, will prove too glitzy for the ever-so-discreet bourgeois burghers of Bordeaux, but the ground-floor Brasserie l'Europe has already captured a loyal local clientele, and the sumptuous restaurant Le Pressoir d'Argent (named after the silver lobster press that presides over the dining room) has serious gastronomic ambitions. A spa and swimming pool are due to open later this year."-From www.cntraveller.com

"Urban Retreat - Open-air restaurants, crowded bazaars, and a swoon-inducing location on the Bosporus—this is a city made for wandering. You’ll find Istanbul at its most alluring in the quaint neighborhoods on the European side of the strait. For lunch, try the sea-bass sandwiches at Mangerie...a rooftop spot in the Bebek district. In the waterside Arnavutköy area, Dilara Erbay dishes up grilled fish at Abracadabra...housed in a wooden mansion. The nearby Rumeli Hisari fortress has panoramic views of the strait, making for a picturesque detour. After dark, there’s Anjelique, a sultry waterside club set against the glowing Baroque Ortaköy Mosque. Take your pick of the new hotels: the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus...an edgy blend of contemporary design and Ottoman influences; or the Park Hyatt Maçka Palas (doubles from $550), where several spa suites come with mini-hammams.""

What's Great Travel + Leisure says... "The “Whatever, Whenever” motto of Starwood’s boutique brand couldn’t be more appropriate in Asia’s frenetic financial capital. Sure, the concierge can have a bespoke suit tailored in just 24 hours, but if money is no object he can also have a private jet at the ready for that last-minute trip to Shanghai. All 393 guest rooms have skyline views and remote-controlled everything (blackout curtains; multicolored mood lighting; iPod docking stations), but be sure to request harbor-facing rooms, as the ICC tower obstructs the panorama on the Hong Kong city side." -From www.travelandleisure.com
Conde Nast Traveler says...
"Given the eccentric decor, the horde of chirpy young staff and the ubiquity of the 23rd letter of the alphabet ('the Wonderful World of W'), there are occasions when the W Hong Kong is reminiscent of Hogwarts. Magic might be too strong a word, but the W, set apart from the city on the western edge of the Kowloon peninsular, is certainly different from the more usual Hong Kong five-stars. Australian and Japanese design firms shaped the look; staff at Bliss, the New York-inspired spa, fairly yodel their welcome to arriving guests; and the Living Room (ie lobby) is rather aggressively touted as somewhere to groove rather than drift through. What saves all this wizardry from gimmickry is that the W has already assumed all the confidence and grace of a veteran. The panorama to the west takes in the typhoon shelter and outlying islands; the 393 rooms - dubbed Fabulous, Fantastic, Marvellous, and so on - dazzle with colour and hi-tech gizmos; waiters breeze about the breakfast buffet in the Kitchen restaurant proffering the chef's recommendations; and the roof-top pool hovers at about the same level that Christian Bale swooped around at in The Dark Knight. To top it all, the hotel is suspended above one of the city's swishest shopping malls and the airport express station.""

225 North Canon Drive Beverly Hills,
California, US
From $425 per night
Nestled in the legendary "Golden Triangle" just steps from Rodeo Drive, Montage Beverly Hills is a celebration of splendor, of beauty, of art and luxury. It is the first hotel of its kind to be built in the area in 16 years, paying homage to an earlier era of graceful living and refined comfort while also offering the most modern amenities. With an exterior designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style and an interior designed with classically elegant furnishings, reminiscent of the Golden Age of Hollywood and Spanish, Italian and Moroccan aesthetics in sun-drenched colors of gold, salmon, coral and cream, Montage Beverly Hills complements the rich history and tradition of Southern California's most celebrated neighborhood. Guests are invited to feel at home in their very own luxurious estate. Over one quarter of the hotel's 201 well-appointed guestrooms are suites. Parq and The Conservatory Grill share a devotion to culinary excellence. From the topiary garden views to the elegant decor, Parq offers a beautiful setting for people engaging in high society at night or conducting business by day. The 20,000-square-foot, two-story Spa Montage offers a true spa experience in the heart of Beverly Hills and the rooftop pool offers panoramic views of Downtown Los Angeles and the Hollywood Hills. You'll be in the midst of all Beverly Hills has to offer while surrounding yourself in ultimate luxury.
What's Great Travel + Leisure says...
"A Maybach parked out front sets the tone at the Montage Beverly Hills, which channels old Hollywood (beamed ceilings; muraled walls) and new L.A. (rooftop pool; Pilates studio). Despite the fact that the hotel opened in November—during one of the worst economic moments in history—this sister to the super-successful Montage Laguna Beach still pampers with perks like poolside foot massages and a monogrammed bolster on the bed. Oh, and did we mention the Mercedes convertibles available to guests staying in suites, and the hotel’s gold-ink pens? Both are befitting of this glamorous address."

Conde Nast Traveler says...
"The Montage, the first new-build grand hotel in Beverly Hills in 16 years, is the urban sister to the Montage Resort in Laguna Beach. Although brand-new, the part Spanish-revival, part Mediterranean hotel looks as if it's been here since movies started talking. Only a stone's throw from Beverly Hills' shops and restaurants, it is nonetheless as quiet as a cloister. The interiors run to copper ceilings, fruitwood floors and fine antiques. In the rooms and suites, the pleasure is in the detail: a desk with laptop outlets you can reach; a period silver cocktail shaker on the dresser. The marble bathrooms are like mini-spas. In the main restaurant, Parq, the Californian sun streams through arched windows. There is also Muse, a formal restaurant with a high-style American menu, and the more relaxed Conservatory Grill next to the rooftop pool. The vast and stunning spa has Swiss showers, a mineral pool, a herbal steam room and every kind of treatment a sybarite could want."-From www.cntraveller.com
